While there are plenty of attractions in Lightning Ridge to enthral any visitor for several days, the is also a little bit of madness in some of the outlying areas; not to mention some must-see attractions and experiences.
The Grawin Loop:
No trip to Lightning Ridge would be complete without a trip to The Grawin... if you think the Ridge is unique... you have to see places like 'The Pub in the Scrub', 'The Glengarry Hilton' and 'Sheepyard Flat'. Grawin was the areas first opal field and is loacated about 90kms from Lighning Ridge via Cumborah.
The Hebel Tour
If arriving from, or departing to, the north via the Castlereagh highway, there are some wonderful sights to see along the way. Lake Corcoran is current full and has been for the last couple of years; although it has been many years since this normally dry paddock has had water in it. When empty, access to the area west of the lake is possible where the Corcoran Opal field is located; an area also great to explore.
Closer to the Queensland border is the quiet town of Angledool with some wonderful old pastoral buildings to explore.
Just past the Queensland border is the town of Hebel, a town with a very interesting history as it was once, claimed to be, the home of Dan Kelly and Steve Hart, members of the infamous Kelly gang. It is believed to have been originally named Kelly's Point but renamed in the 1890's to Hebel, the name of German settles in the area.
